4 ways to keep your battery in good health

DeWalt battery and Badaptor

If you want to convert your DeWalt 18-20V, Makita, Milwaukee, or Bosch Professional 18V battery for use with the Ryobi One+ range, it’s important to know some key information on battery usage.

Here are 4 ways to keep your battery in good health.

Don’t use a Badaptor to charge your battery

Although they’re a great-value, money-saving option, Badaptors aren’t designed for charging your existing battery with a Ryobi One+ charger. It’s not safe, and the Badaptor won’t allow any charging to take place.

You should only use a Badaptor to convert your Makita, DeWalt, Milwaukee or Bosch Professional battery for use with a Ryobi One+ tool.

Know when your battery needs recharging

As most users of Lithium / Lithium-Ion batteries know, they should never be drained completely, as this can cause damage and prevent them from working.

For an 18/20V system, the batteries should not be discharged below 14V.

In most cases, when the battery voltage drops to around 16V, the tool’s speed and performance will start to fall off. At 15-14V the drop in performance can be severe, and it’s usually clear that the battery needs recharging.

When using a Badaptor, we would recommend that you recharge your battery when the performance starts to decline. Doing so will extend battery life, protect the battery from deep discharge (also known as over-discharge), and also maximise tool life by keeping it working at the correct voltage.

Stop the charge from going too low

As mentioned above, it’s good practice to recharge Lithium-Ion batteries before they get too low. This puts less strain on the battery and tool, and will help to extend the life of both.

The Badaptor is simply a battery adaptor, and doesn’t contain a cut off system, so it’s important to observe good practice to protect the life of your battery.

Many Ryobi tools contain over discharge protection, as do many brands of battery.

However, as tools and batteries are changing all the time, there are some combinations where neither the tool nor battery has deep discharge protection. In these cases, if the tool continued to be operated as it started to slow down considerably, the battery could be drained to a point where it could not be recharged again.

Instead, make sure you protect your battery and stop operating your tool if the performance starts to decline. Remove your battery and let it charge so it’s in good shape and ready for next time you need it.

Don’t store your battery in a low state of charge

Lithium-Ion batteries slowly discharge during storage, which is why it’s important that they’re not stored in a state of low charge. The more charge your battery has when stored, the greater storage time you’ll have before the battery self-discharges, and is in danger of falling below the critical point where recharging is not possible.

By taking care of your battery properly, you can convert it safely and start exploring what the Ryobi One+ range of tools has to offer. Get your Badaptor now at badaptor.com.
